At least two people have died while three others sustained serious injuries following a head-on collision involving a VW Polo sedan and a Suzuki Ertiga SVU on the R409 road in Butterworth near Tutura towards Centane earlier today. Both vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when the accident occurred. The VW Polo was travelling from Butterworth towards Centane, while the Suzuki Ertiga with 3 occupants was travelling from Centane towards Butterworth. Two occupants were declared dead at the scene of the accident by emergency services (one adult female passenger from the Suzuki and the male driver of the VW Polo).
One passenger from the VW Polo, the driver of the Suzuki Ertiga and its passenger sustained various injuries and were rushed to Butterworth Hospital. It is alleged that driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless as well as negligent driving were the main contributing factors to the crash. Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha continues to urge motorists to obey the rules of the road. The MEC expressed his sincere condolences to the grieving families and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery. The case of culpable homicide has been at Centane Police Station for further investigation.
