Addressing the gathering, MEC of the Department of Agriculture, Ms. Nonceba Kontsiwe, reaffirmed the Department’s dedication to combating poverty and hunger across the province. “Our mission is to confront poverty directly and work toward the complete eradication of hunger within our communities,” she emphasised.
Mbhashe Council Speaker, Cllr Babalwa Majavu, also highlighted the significance of the event, particularly during Women’s Month. “Empowering women in agriculture not only uplifts households but also plays a critical role in stimulating the local economy,” she expressed.
The programme featured presentations from a range of stakeholders, including the Amathole District Municipality Rapid Response Team, the Commission for Gender Equality, the National Prosecuting Authority, and the speaker of the day talked under the topic Remove the Mask. They also emphasised the importance of providing rural women with the necessary tools, skills, and resources to thrive in agriculture and contribute meaningfully to food security and development.
Through collaborative efforts between government, civil society, and traditional leadership, the community was called upon to stand united in protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls.
