Unveiling and wreath laying of the Statue of Mbulelo Ngono.

The Battle of Lurwayizo tells the story of a powerful liberation struggle that unfolded in one of the small rural towns within Mbhashe Local Municipality, under the Amathole District in the Eastern Cape.

It was here, in the quiet village of Lurwayizo, that brave uMkhonto weSizwe freedom fighters including Mbulelo Ngono, Maqhekeza, and members of the Jafta family stood their ground against the brutal apartheid regime.

Seen as “terrorists” by the oppressive government of the time, these heroes faced a fierce 36-hour shootout with apartheid police, who were determined to capture Mbulelo Ngono, a key target in their manhunt. What happened in Lurwayizo is more than a gun battle, it was a symbol of resistance, sacrifice, and the unyielding spirit of those who dared to fight for freedom.
